Pizza. Wine. Early 90s Thursday.
With the weekend just around the corner, it's so easy to get lazy and hunt for the closest pizza or burger place. My will is weak when speaking in terms of the stomach. I've kinda made a habit of pizza Thursdays. And it's mostly a product of being given a pizza stone over 2 years ago. That baby is well seasoned and gives me the perfect crust everytime, that is until my girlfriend makes the pizza. A pizza stone knows it's owner.
Speaking of which, Thursdays are usually one of the few days where it's just the dog and I. We usually catch up on some classic Simpsons episodes, brush up on the random facts with Jeopardy, and usually become nostalgic with some early 90s movies (or 80s depending on what's On Demand.)
On these nights, the Tombstone Supreme Pizza never fails. If you can limit yourself to half a pizza (this is where you laugh), then you should still be ok to have a beer or two or a couple glasses of wine. (laughter continues) And you'll go to sleep free of regret.
I've figured out the best way to turn any plain old frozen pizza in to a great pizza. It's not DiGiorno. You don't even "need" the pizza stone but if you love pizza, invest. When all else fails, spice up a pizza, grab this wine and call it the easiest night of the week. Start the weekend right.
Here's what you'll need:
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- red pepper flakes
- italian seasoning
- dried basil and dried rosemary (optional)
- grated parmesan
2. I'd be more careful with the red pepper flakes as you sprinkle those around especially if you haven't built up the tolerance to the spice.
3. Finish with as much parm as you like and just follow the cooking instructions on the packet.
Try this on all your pizzas and you'll probably never go back to unseasoned ones again. I'm hoping you play with these spices on your pizza. Throw on some more garlic if you love it. Lay on the layer of italian or rosemary heavier than usual to see how the pizza tastes. Just don't be shy.
With pizza, you could go either beer or wine. When going wine, keep two things in mind. With spicy pizza, go with a mellow, lightly tannic red such as a Montepulciano. With a really garlicy pizza, go with a fruitier red so the wine isn't over powered by the garlic, such as a Lambrusco.
Just because you don't want to cook doesn't mean you have to pick up the phone. You know pizza always hits the spot.
